In this episode, we talk about how I decided to retrofit my 129-year-old house with modern networking. I walk you through the difference between a modem, router, and wi-fi access point, why mesh networks like Google WiFi and Eero don't always yield the best results, the benefits to having wired, RJ45 ethernet in your house wherever you possibly can, and I put it throughout my house! I show how to add new cable drops to your home, how to plan cable runs, how to run a centralized server/network center, gear that you may want to consider using, where to put your wifi access points and more! I show you how to terminate an ethernet cable with an RJ45 connector, tips for stripping cable and using a crimper, how to use a punch-down tool to utilize keystone jacks, and how to verify your wiring is correct using a cable tester. Come join the fun!

With wifi6 mesh networks this is unnecessary, I wouldn't even hardwire servers. People overestimate wifi failures, and mesh networks handle them gracefully for residential setups.

The one that taught me the standards said A is for America and we use B. Blue phone Orange Data - Green Data + (dont exactly remember +/-, but im pretty sure) Brown is kinda misc, it isent used and it is used. power on POE devices often goes here. Since blue and brown arent used for data, you could do a low speed dual connection if the speed isent an issue but space is.

Has nobody pointed out that it's 110 and 66, not 99 yet? Yeah, 66 blocks are pretty much a POTS relic, but you're making a how-to video, you should at least get the terminology correct. I won't complain about skipping BIX and Krone (two other terminal block "standards") in your explanation since homeowners will likely never run into them, but accurate terms matter when people are counting on you for their education.

Wireless access point setup is underrated is placed well across the house. ROI for wired setup isn't great if most of the devices are wireless. Its also a lot cheaper and not to mention how easy it is to setup wireless points than this. Good setup though if you absolutely need a wired one!

Hold up, you're telling me this over a century year old house has Google fiber? Jesus, my town only covers half of it's residents with 20mb internet and the other half aren't worth the cost of expanding. Fuck ISPs, internet's a necessity in today's age there should be at least 2 options for every home. People can't live off of telecommunication companies capping hotspot data, kids need access to school work and adults need access to remote-working internet speeds. You would think during Covid there would have been more fuss about it since people were required to stay home.

I would recommend CAT 6e .. they are a little bit more expensive, but have better signal strength due to shielding and support 10gig on longer runs. And again, it's worth the little price difference. they are definitely future proof. I had no problems crimping these cables and put jacks on them .. It was my first time preparing LAN cables and just watched some tutorial on youtube .. so it's doable for everybody. And the pennywise at 11:10 got me haha

the craziest thing about this video is that your isp let you use a third party router.
Bobo Won
Bobo Won 6 өдрийн өмнө
@Frank Silvers every time someone tries to make a change the courts say "hey you guys have to let people use third party routers" and then they say "hey our official policy is that we do. " and thats the end of that, then they continue to only support their first party rentals and make it next to impossible to use your own. Pretty sure theres plenty of bribery involved
Frank Silvers
Frank Silvers 6 өдрийн өмнө
@Bobo Won There needs to be a lawsuit to address that.
Bobo Won
Bobo Won 7 өдрийн өмнө
@Frank Silvers technically on paper its the same here but the only supported routers are the ones the isp rent. Canadian isp basically get to treat canadians like their bitch because theres only really 3 companies that manage internet in canada and they tend to avoid overlapping each others territory as much as possible.
Frank Silvers
Frank Silvers 7 өдрийн өмнө
@Bobo Won That's crazy. Why is that? Here in America with any Internet service provider you can use whatever modem/router you want, assuming it’s not old and unsupported. In fact I’m shopping for one right now because I’m changing my Internet service to cable.
Bobo Won
Bobo Won 7 өдрийн өмнө
@Frank Silvers in Canada trying to use a third party router is about as painful as pulling out all your teeth with nail clippers. I worked for Roger's and they made it as hard as humanly possible to use your own router, and would often try to charge you rental for it anyways

Drywall ? - Cries in a Danish brickwall house...
Svt Trips
Svt Trips 7 өдрийн өмнө
@Frank Silvers I’ve been to USA, many times. If I take a hammer, and smash it into a drywall, I will make a hole. If I do the same to a brick wall, nothing will happen. I do have drywall’s on the 2nd floor, even double on all walls, with metal behind it. And it’s not as soundproof, as concrete or brick. It’s not true, that it will collapse during earthquakes. Look up, how some very tall buildings in Japan, and New Zealand are build. :-)
Frank Silvers
Frank Silvers 7 өдрийн өмнө
@Svt Trips First off, how would you know they "are so loud"? The fact is they are not. You can also easily sound insulate them. They look "cheap and flimsy" to you because you are ignorant on the matter. A drywall wall can also easily be stronger than a brick wall. In fact even stronger than a concrete block wall. I know because I have built and destroyed them. Wood structures can be very strong and last indefinitely when properly built and maintained. In fact some of the world's oldest structures and homes are made of wood, including in your part of the world. They are also far more resilient in earthquake prone locations. A brick and concrete block home would collapse in an earthquake.
Svt Trips
Svt Trips 7 өдрийн өмнө
@Frank Silvers But, dry walled houses, are so loud. And most American houses, looks so cheap and flimsy. Here in Denmark, it’s pretty normal to live in very old buildings. Both apartments or houses, because they are made from brick. But I agree, it’s more difficult to work with indoor.
Frank Silvers
Frank Silvers 7 өдрийн өмнө
Drywall is a wonderful material for interior walls. It’s so versatile and so easy to modify and repair. That's why even new brick and concrete block buildings here in America still have drywall interior walls. In commercial buildings the only difference you typically see with drywall walls is that the studs are steel rather than wood, as you would typically see in American homes.

Tip from an AV/Data comm integrator. Bend all the pairs down, take a small flathead and insert it into the crease of the pair, bend back up, and pull! (Make make sure the round part of the screwdriver is pushed through to avoid nicking the wire). This will unwind them and make the wire perfectly straight. Works extremely well on CAT6a where the pairs are super tight.
