I watched a lot of guesswork in this video. In terms of what charger will they use? There are adapters allowing non-Tesla electric vehicles to plug into Tesla charging stations. They may go that route. I think you're foolish to assume private ownership of vehicles is going to magically "go away". Auto makers aren't going to give their cars away. There will always be private ownership even if it is masked as some sort of "community" service. Somebody owns those cars.

Apple products are great service is horrible Cars have wear and tear and needs to be seen. Of course their cars will be premium so Hyndia Toyota need not be worried. Apples software integration and hardware will be killer same what they did in devices will happen in car but will take time first releases will be lukewarm like AirPods max.

I won't buy it, it's going to be $100'000'000'000, it will not come with a charger included, official repairs would be mostly denied, and any replacement parts would make the car stop functioning unless an apple employee replace parts themselves Also, the battery will die out within 5 years and would be considered too vintage to replace within that time

Apple making cars would be terrible considering their stance on right to repair. They would probably serialize the wheels so if you put an aftermarket wheel on the car would refuse to work. Unless you paid them a hefty fee of course.

Aside from suddenly coming into a lot of money, the only other way I’d buy an Apple car is if it uses Tesla supercharger network. Every single video I see about EVs mentions having to drive around to several stations before finding a 3rd party charger that works. Idk if Tesla videos just don’t mention it or if they actually do work, but that’s the one I’m going with. Model S or whatever Apple drops.

Apple isn't "making" any car at present. They have no prototype, factory or even committed specs. I don't really care to speculate until they do.

So there are a few things left out in this piece where we now know Apple has a huge competitive advantage over others. The first thing is: advanced microprocessors. The performance in both speed and battery consumption of the M1 chip were a complete shock and surprise to the field when this product was released just months ago. And Apple has publicly committed to replacing Intel on all of their products in the next 1.5 years. As Snazzy Labs notes, they need to do product development years in advance, so you can be pretty confident that they have already designed more advanced microprocessors than we have seen anywhere else already, and maybe just need to get one more process shrink to get all of a current Mac Pro (minus maybe some extra GPU muscle?) onto something they could put in one package. We also know that Apple has been messing around a lot with integrating LIDAR with optical data on their cameras, and the result so far on consumer grade phones are...pretty impressive, actually, and on devices that are literally doing a million other things taking up more silicon than this would. In terms of mapping, we know that Apple Maps has gone from horrific to, well, basically okay over the past couple of years in particular, and that the amount of “Look Around” data gets larger by the day. The Snazzy one notes that they have not been doing as much autonomous driving of late, but they have been doing a huuuuuge amount of mapping data by (presumably) skilled drivers, and during said drives have sucked up a huuuuuge amount of road, condition, and other driver data. I would not be hugely surprised if they were then feeding this data into some adversarial learning program (“This is not a street”?) to learn a lot about driving without, you know, actually driving. And as the Snazzitude did note, Apple is pretty good at developing ways to optimize power use and many other things.This could all take time, but there could come a day say four years from now when Apple suddenly releases a platform that can be incorporated very widely into other designs that would look like it came from another astral plane entirely. But if this were going to happen, I do predict the first warning shot would be a version of Siri that suddenly made you go “Hmm...” Right now, Siri’s voice recognition is just fine; she just doesn’t know where to go from there. In the next leap forward, you might see something far more impressive.

Having Apple making a car gives a whole new meaning to the term "crashing".

For me to buy an electric car its the practicality of it in terms of range. Regardless weather it could haul a lot of cargo or just 4-5 passengers, if I'm limited to only 100-200 miles on a charge then I cannot use it. I don't live in the city I live (like most Americans) in a rural area where driving hours a day to commute is a must. Now take for instance I have a business trip or need to see my family. I usually drive 600 miles and fill up once on my trip. With an EV I would have to stop multiple times and waste precious hours for charging. This makes EVs out of the question for me. I would love to have one don't get me wrong, saving the planet and lowering my carbon footprint for generations to come is important to me, but right now the economy has just not got there.

Okay, Quinn, my 2c on this. Back in 2016 I put together a team that developed a DARPA proposal for their Lifelong Learning Machines (L2M) program, and one of the big ideas of L2M was that self-driving car AI technology was just not capable of serious, multilevel learning - new concepts were never learned, only new associations. We tried to get them interested in something radically new (it goes without saying that we failed 😉), but the one thing that I want to contribute to your discussion here is that AI never really proceeds in a straight line - it goes straightish for a bit, then all of a sudden it lurches off in a completely new direction. It does not build on what came before, it throws everything out and chases the next shiny new thing. So, what matters right now is whether Apple is capable of leading one of those AI revolutions. If the answer is Yes, then full autonomous driving *could* be years away, rather than decades. But..... I gotta say that I don’t think they are capable of revolutionary thinking anymore. Tim is a Safe-Bet kind of guy. So although they could do a good job of autonomous vehicles, sadly I don’t think they will.

If they let me use it with my samsung (yeah love their watch design and os + the exclusive features you get with a samsung phone so stuck with them) I might consider it (if I can afford it) or a telsa (when I can afford that eventually). After re-watching this and getting around other information I’ve come to consider another option, maybe Apple can release a self driven taxi service and outright try to replace car ownership, even better with a monthly subscription format. It solves the problem about dealerships and public servicing, also makes sense with their interest in lidar rather than cameras to power computer vision, and most importantly, lets them put vehicles in the street without need to ask or take the users’ information, as all the vehicles of the service would be owned by Apple, they would build up their database by themselves as they ride around for the services, first in controlled locations and scaling outwards from there. Does it make any sense then?

Why are people trying to make a big deal about an apple car when we have a good Sony car prototype driving around, why are they not getting that hype.

Given Apple is Apple I'd throw in some food for thought. Apple wants to be better than average. They don't go for the extreme. Given Hyundais quality and brand name Apple might shoot for the market of Toyota and VW, but not for Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar or even Porsche, not to mention RR. So, if they'd go with anything to be build by Hyundai it must be way better than anything Toyota offers. And also be better than the most of what VW offers. So, we are talking Camry, Prius and Golf or ID3 or ID4. The price will be like 20% to 30% higher, but the build quality should lean towards BMW or even Mercedes.Their base models are simple, but build well. They make the money in selling extras. So, you might end up with a Hyundai Kona in good quality and nice haptics, plus absolutely mind blowing interfaces and a revolution in UX. Apple won't compete with outliers but with the leaders of the pack. Scale profits come only at large scale. However, it seems reasonable that they will take Elon for his word and get these cars access to the super charger network in addition to either a smart way to charge at home or by adding in a range extender alike DMFC, because methanol can be distributed via any gas station of wich there are plenty already. (See Aiways and Gumpert Natalie for the brutal performance of these DMFCs.)

This dude knows little or nothing about the automotive industry. First, Apple is nowhere close to making a breakthrough in battery technology. Again, the monocell LFP is nothing new or breakthrough and, beside, doing hardcore research isn't in Apple's DNA. Second, Hyundai isn not interested in becoming an OEM -- they got too many exiciting things going on now with their new EGMP platform on the EV end; collaboration with Rimac on performance cars; and level 4 self-driving capability with Aptiva. Finally, there are contract vehicle manuacturers who could mindlessly print cars according to their customers' spec, ie, Magna and most recently Foxcon & Geely. The fact that Apple approached HMG demonstrates that they need signicant help from experienced automakers.

Will apples new map system be used as an ai training system. Obviously they would have a more up to date and higher information system. Instead of having cars actually driving around they could make a large jump by ha being a digital fleet training on the virtual streets.

when looked at the potential market to go and capture like jobs said on iphone 1 where 100million phones sold per year and also 100million cars sold per year. But the market is 100X diverse, price points, countries and time to build and ship. Apple very likely wont build cars but maybe just skateboard of batteries, electric motor and software but not car. That is something they can do well and succeed in near term. With software they would provide the maps with nav n ipad etc and sync with skateboard, motor n batteries? does it make sense?

I personally do not believe that Apple will make a car. Remember when everyone thought Google was making a console and then it was actually Stadia? I think it's a similar thing here. Apple will get involved in cars, just not in the way we think they will.
