Don't think the assistant coach that has been by coach Drews side , for years, didn't have a role in this tremendous culmination of a struggle from a catastrophe with his predecessor. Drew had enough insight to tap a young man as his assistant, that didn't even have a degree. Drew took flack for that.

In the entire history of NCAA Division I Men's Basketball there have been only seven teams with a perfect season going undefeated through the regular season, conference tournament, and the NCAA tournament. The first was the University of San Francisco Dons in 1956. It was done the very next year by the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. The last team to do it was the 1976 Indiana University Hoosiers. The other four were John Wooden's UCLA Bruins, 1964, 1967, 1972, and 1973, a coaching accomplishment never to be equaled.

The Zags didn't look like they belonged on the floor with Baylor. Who's the true 2nd best team in the tourney?
Ron Palmer11 өдрийн өмнө
These teams could have played 10x and BU would have won 9. IMHO, I think this team is one of the greatest of all time and they didn't have a Michael Jordan, a Larry Bird, or Magic Johnson. The 8 players who played are as a group of 8 I've ever seen. They know their roles and play them well. Congrats to Scott Drew who is THE ONE who put these guys in a blender and create a magical chemistry unparalleled this year for sure and maybe this century. Nobody had an answer for this smothering defense. I didn't see one half court possession by GU in which they were not made uncomfortable, were able to get to "their" spot, or got good shots. All 5 guys on the floor can guard any position and they did get Timme on the block they were quick with weak side help while still covering the rest of the floor. BU's bigs are not formidable, but they did enough bc they have so much trust in each other. I'm amazed. National champs usually play very well and get better each tourney game and BU fit this description like it was drawn up. It's been this way almost all year minus the post Covid losses. They proved that conference tourneys are a joke if you are elite. Better to lose after one game and go rest and practice if you've got a high seed locked up. This team is the greatest "team" I have ever seen. No real superstars, no individual dominators, yet like a complex puzzle each piece is carefully constructed such that each one is needed at the right time in the right place and the the final product is genius. Not taking anything away from GU, but this team does not play or game plan for anybody but themselves. They win or lose based on how THEY play and perform regardless of the opponent.

Way to represent the Big 12. Cause god knows Texas didn’t 🤦♂️

This game reminded me of pickup game where you come with your five. And you go play way out somewhere at their gym and just spank them.

The tough Game against UCLA softened up Gonzaga for Baylor.
Mark Sawyer12 өдрийн өмнө
Amazing performance by Baylor. Crazy intense defense, butter-smooth shooting from 3, quicker, more aggressive and skilled. Gonzaga had no chance. I think we need to tap the brakes on Gonzaga going forward...
TheMeefive12 өдрийн өмнө
I was waiting for this egg on the face moment. The talking heads never learn. They were saying the same things about Gonzaga that they were saying about Larry Johnson's Runnin Rebels decades ago. "These guys are professional talent." "These guys are by far the best team in college basketball." "We don't see anybody beating them." Welcome to March Madness ... again. There are no locks in a one and done tournament. Teams that come in unbeaten are at a disadvantage. It's the law of averages. Gonzaga is perennially always the bridesmaid never the bride. Another media darling bites the dust.
Simeon Hammett12 өдрийн өмнө
They would still lose please realize they don't play anyone all year long and Baylor jumped on their ass media makes teams seem better than they are I appreciate all the college athletes who entertained us this past year and the NCAA needs to pay

Like Charles Barkley said they got a weight room at Baylor.
idontwaitfor42010 өдрийн өмнө
There was a tweet I think from Jay Bilas that said Gonzaga: we've got a high scoring offense Baylor: Well we work out with the football team
Gary Brown12 өдрийн өмнө

Matt Watters12 өдрийн өмнө
So tired of Gonzaga. Overrated because of a weak conference. They get 5 star recruits every year because they know they are automatically going to the tournament because of their weak conference. Put them in a real conference and its a whole other story.
Brad Lewis8 өдрийн өмнө
Yes they're league is a tad below par on the whole but with St Mary's and BYU having had some quality teams over the years! But this past season the Zags actually did face some solid competition in the non-conference with Kansas, West Virginia, then-defending national champion UVA and also played Iowa! I agree they need to be in a Power 5 league, but it's not their fault the level of red tape they'd hafta go thru to make that happen!
Ispeakthetruthify12 өдрийн өмнө
Not trying to be funny: But a team with a guy named "TIMMY!!!", will NEVER win a title....

That was probably the least exciting championship game I've ever watched...good for Baylor fans, but anyone that was just hoping for a good game was let down big time. I was listening to the Paul Allen show yesterday morning and they were saying how Baylor was going to shut the zags down on D...boy were they right! Anyway, I had already lost interest very early in the second half when you could see that Gonzaga wasn't really going to make a game of it....snooze fest.
tyslink12 өдрийн өмнө
@Ispeakthetruthify True. They looked completely outmatched at both ends of the court.
Ispeakthetruthify12 өдрийн өмнө
Blame the Zags for playing absolutely NOBODY all year. That caught up with them.....

This is the result when one team hasn’t played back to back games against highly talented teams all year. Gonzaga played 25 games between competitive games and when they needed to do it twice in a row they came up short. Baylor on the other hand plays talented teams on a regular basis. That’s why you haven’t seen a non power 5 school win in 20 years.
Naitsix12 өдрийн өмнө
Baylor finished what they started last year before Covid they wanted it more

Speaking Truths12 өдрийн өмнө
Gonzaga was exposed as having no toughness whatsoever, especially in the front court. This was a fundamental issue with Mark Few’s team. Barely got away with it vs UCLA. Made it through the whole season simply out scoring people.
Super Sunny Gaming12 өдрийн өмнө
The people they out scored were 99% teams that no one has really ever heard off
David Ahart12 өдрийн өмнө
Baylor beat the Timme snot out of the Zags from start to finish. End of story.

CONGRATULATIONS to the 2021 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS BAYLOR BEARS BASKETBALL "TEAM," their coach Scott Drew, Assistant coaches & Baylor fans! I was impressed by Baylor's talent, their coaching & "PRECISION of Execution." Baylor played well as a TEAM the entire season and tonight's game showcased the TEAM's "cohesive precision" & DOMINATION from tip-off to the W. And THAT precision starts at the top, so again, congrats Scott & Baylor's assistant coaches! Congrats are due as well for Gonzaga's 31-1 year!

I believe Baylor would’ve if they didn’t have that month long covid pause. People forget Baylor should’ve been undefeated too. But should’ve, could’ve, would’ve gets you no where lol.
Gary Collier12 өдрийн өмнө
Baylor was much more athletic than Gonzaga. Not to sound racist but Gonzaga need to recruit more American born blacks. When it comes to basketball American born blacks are more athletic than anyone else on planet earth.
Brian Kidd12 өдрийн өмнө
@Gary Collier Out of all those players, let's see who has the best NBA career.
Gary Collier12 өдрийн өмнө
@Brian Kidd No he was not. Suggs was the fifth best player on the court last night. Two stupid fouls in the first 2 minutes of the game how can he be the best .
Brian Kidd12 өдрийн өмнө
When it's all said and done though, Jalen Suggs was the best player on the floor last night. That kid IS athletic and I can see him starting in the NBA. The argument about American black athletes having better genes for basketball could be true, but tell that to the 1980s Celtics. Bird, McHale and Ainge held their own against the likes of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Jabbar. In general, different races have different body types. What Gonzaga SHOULD do is recruit from out of the country and land themselves some Eastern Bloc players like Dragić and Luka lol. Oh and remember, the all-time leading scorer and possibly the best NCAA basketball player of all time was white: "Pistol" Pete Maravich.

even beyond athleticism, baylor was better at dribbling, passing, cutting, rotating, defending, miles better at shooting. Gonzaga just didn't have enough skill for this matchup

Glad Baylor Won! Not a Gonzaga hater, but I couldn't stand that Timme dude. Doing his goatee mocking celebration even when he made simple layups. Can't stand that!
Unbias Cowboy12 өдрийн өмнө
Funny thing Baylor begged him to come to their school because he’s from up the street. He thought he was too good lol 😂.

Jav C12 өдрийн өмнө
Congrats to Baylor. Zags faced some real men tonight and they were overmatched. I know CBS wanted Zags to win so badly but the better team won. Baylor beats the Zags 9 times out of 10. Easy!

Brandon Christopher12 өдрийн өмнө
Gonzaga was so overrated You could tell by watching that UCLA game that UCLA was probably the better team and it took that miracle shot for them to win it
CHRISTINE JONES12 өдрийн өмнө
@Ryan Mcgee Refs also cheated a little for Gonzaga. Two really bad calls in final couple minutes of regulation against UCLA. Should've been UCLA shooting free throws both times but refs did a 'no call' one play (when Riley got fouled on the dunk and ended up missing. yes, the guy hit his hand). And UCLA called for a charge at end of regulation when it should've been a call against Zags because the guy's feet were not fully set. They were moving.
Jerry Leibowitz12 өдрийн өмнө
Gonzaga’s situation is like none other in the NCAA. They recruit with the elite teams, play a few good non-conference games, then fatten up on a weak conference and coast into the tournament with a high seeding and are all but guaranteed a deep run into the tourney. I’d like to see how they’d fare playing through the rigors of conferences like the Pac12, ACC,, SEC, Big East, etc. They would not waltz into the tournament unscathed while preening their mustaches.
Ryan Mcgee12 өдрийн өмнө
Ucla didn’t lose they ran out of time, he said it best!

@Jav C facts
Jav C12 өдрийн өмнө
of course Zags were overrated. UCLA almost got them but Baylor played a complete game and demolished those kids. Congrats to Baylor
Sean Jay12 өдрийн өмнө
Avery, you just said what I want to say when I mowed my yard before the game. Is the providence, UCLA should be in the game if not for the BAD officiating that cut their right. However, Balor's confidence in Houston game contract the Zags's shock from UCLA game already well spell the conclusion!
Sean Jay12 өдрийн өмнө
The guy who score the first 7points for Gonzaga used elbow to pushed Campbell to the floor before finished layup; Sugg's block of Riley's dunk was actually buy pushing Riley's hand to push the ball; Zhuzhen layup is after changing direction to avoid straight collide to finish.and none were considered, that was a potential 6 points difference in a tied game!
Max Lennon12 өдрийн өмнө
Which bit of officiating were you referring to specifically?
INFINITE UNIVERSE12 өдрийн өмнө
Looked like the Bruins would have given them a better game, coach didn't have the Zags ready for the final 4.

Jerry Leibowitz12 өдрийн өмнө
Nobody would have beaten Baylor tonight. I will say that UCLA might just have easily been in this title game and made Gonzaga look beatable for the first time this year. The Bruins delivered a lot of body blows to the Zag's psyche and like great teams do, Baylor went in for the kill. Congratulations to this quartet of fantastic teams in the final four.

Gonzaga is a joke! Baylor 🐻!
Brad Lewis11 өдрийн өмнө
And like most on these posts your shortchanging the Zags because of their league and that much is a fact! But these Zags played Kansas, West Virginia, defending national champion UVa and Iowa in the non-conference so they were solid against some quality competition! But calling the Zags a joke is a slap at Baylor to be honest! Baylor earned this national championship and it had nothing to do with who Gonzaga played or didn't play! Baylor on the most important stage just happened to prove they were an equal to anybody
Brad Lewis11 өдрийн өмнө
@Johnny Xiong one huge difference though! The Giants didn't win that SB until there were 35 seconds left in the game! Gonzaga was never in this national championship game from the opening tip! And also the Giants had already taken the Patriots to the wire last game of that '07 regular season so they proved they could go toe to toe with NE!
Sasuke Uchiha12 өдрийн өмнө
@DimeStoreProphets yep a joke that didn’t age well
Mark Kang12 өдрийн өмнө
@Johnny Xiong or the Kentucky team that lost the undefeated, or my 2014 CFB fsu team that got murdered in the playoffs, doesn’t matter if you were good before, can you win the championship? That’s all that matters.
Johnny Xiong12 өдрийн өмнө
@DimeStoreProphets Gonzaga got beat like the undefeated New England Patriots team in 2008. Lost to the wild card New York Giants. Both teams are a joke, even though one team is a college basketball and the other is a NFL team. Undefeated in the regular season, but win no championship! All for nothing!
