I could get behind the No. 1, Everything else was whatever has been rolling there from the 90's. Huge amounts of effects and autotune. Those beats not excactly Bonham either. Everything kinda in the same mood, not even a mood, just mellow...

I agree that the complexity and musical quality has vastly increased. I just can't relate to the singers, though, talented as they are. They don't seem...human. Nor do the players, actually.

Umm... When are we gonna get away from novacaine vocals? Most everyone sings like they're afraid to move their lips. 34+35. Ugh! Ariana Grande's voice grates on my nerves. Therefore I Am. The song (and most of the other tracks) would make a fine instrumental. Just drop the sludgy break up junk on top of it. I hear this song over and over at work and the verse is negligible so all I get is someone whispering "I'm not your friend" over and over. It's surreal just how depressing it is to listen to stuff like that. I love the way Rick can launch into the chords so quickly by ear. And that he can still find value in music for kids a generation down from him. I try but can't quite do it. Too much of it sounds like break up fights set to music.

Pop music used to have instrumentation! All of these seemed sparsely instrumented. The vocal stylings are remarkably similar: "hurt", is a way to describe it, voices on the edge of cracking...because they wanna cry. Rick is so kind in his appraisals!

I don’t know; for mine there is some nice writing going on in a few of these tracks but I feel like most of it is meh once homogenised through the prism of a ‘modern pop’ production. Something vapid about most of it.

Came to the comments to see all the "back in my day" folk bashing today's pop music. I think Rick is right to keep an open mind, because in a sea of mediocrity there are some gems. That's how it's always been, but people only remember the classics. And as a music producer I assure you it's not any less difficult to create hit songs as it was in your day. The tools have just changed. Technical skill was crucial back then, but now sound design / layering is everything. A "basic" pop song like the Ariana record might have over 200 tracks in the final mix

I really like you're open to today's pop music and I was really interested in your musical analysis. But the music is really trash, even that the most simple "trick" like a off beat guitar upstroke sounds interesting... Says enough how dull it is. Not even to mention the "in your face raunchy I need to get laid"-vibe in most lyrics.

Rick, thanks for the music analysis. It's all appreciated. You do a superb job. I got to tell you. When you add your guitar chords to these most recent pop songs, it makes them sound better. I don't know what it is about the pop music today. It sounds empty. Here's a comparison to a pop song released in March, 1968 by Spanky And Our Gang. The Wrecking Crew did the music. "Like To Get To Know You." Released almost 53 years ago, and in my humble opinion, nothing today comes close to the production, the arrangements, the music and vocal harmonies in this song. The ending (Coda) is maybe the best, most beautiful song ending in pop music history. Maybe you could do a "What Makes This Song Great" on this classic piece of pop music history.

OK...Rick like your reactions/video's...however I still feel that even if the artists today are not that bad....they are in my opinion 'bad' in the long run. I remember the hits from DIDO (British female singer) who had this same kind of sounds and it was not bad but after hit no.1 her next song was not exactly but sonically almost a copy from the previous hit. From then on I started to get irritated by that kind of bland, creamy, commercial music. I just cannot listen to music that maybe is not so bad initially but after second, third listen it bores me to death. A forerunner from '80ies/'90ies of that was a duo called 'Everyting but the girl'....to this day I still think its just so dull/coffee table music. The music today is not 'bad' as such but it is so dull and repetitive. Even if there's 'something good hidden in the background'...the overall sound at least suggests endless repetition and that's not one song but its the whole top 40. Look repetition in music is great in avant-garde / minimalism (Philip Glass/Laurie Anderson) but repetition in musical effects and patterns in lots of pop is just a kind of cop out. Glad about your remarks about using real instruments...when artists use that its such an improvement above the use of software.

To revive a famous line from many decades ago which applies to the weak musical and lyrical qualities of today's pop tunes: Dorothy Parker remarked on seeing Kate Hepburn in a Broadway play, that she "ran the whole gamut of emotions, from A to B.”

Seems as if today's music (definitely won't call them artists) brands, are so one dimensional, sounds like everyone works out of one recording studio using the same sounds, production and software. The music now has no soul. Yeah there is an occasional really good song, but 98% is ear candy to be eaten at this moment in time. Nothing that will stand the test of time.
