Asking someone what the first "smartphone" was will result in different answers. It's well-recognized that the 2007 iPhone inspired the modern-era of smartphones we enjoy today; however, smartphones go back much further than that. Most generally recognize IBM's Simon from the early 1990s as the first crack at what we'd consider a modern smartphone. The Simon could send email, pages, and faxes while also being able to make calls over a cellular (as well as landline lol) network! There have been lots of "firsts" in the smartphone industry and we take a look at just how far we've come and what may be in store for the future.

That video is a masterpiece by HUAWEI PR. Trying to rewrite history by getting a willing Tech-MNdownr known for content on Apple (mostly negative towards) to undermine the common definition of a smartphone in their favor, which would normally lead towards the original iPhone being the first "modern smartphone". Chapeau, Huawei PR!

How can you in good conscience take money from Huawei of all companies. Kinda disgusting and very disappointing. Even keeping aside the morals and the politics, their products are absolutely useless for anyone outside China. Good channels usually are more selective about who they take money from and what products they promote. It's not even a normal video. Literally just an ad.

Given the amount of rude and unhelpful negativity around this video, I'll try to be more constructive. I've always liked your deep dives into esoteric tech, and the first half of the video gave me those same vibes. Seeing the pedigree of the modern smartphone developing over time was great, and highlighting key milestones was neat; after a while, you forget where certain trends actually originated. I'd love to see an expanded series on this, perhaps with a few hands on with the notible standouts. Visuals and editing were the Snazzy Labs standard, and Quinn is "always a win". Conversely, the second half of the video felt like a very standard "read the talking points" script, with little disclaimer or opportunity to skip. Not saying the name of competitors is a good example of where I could feel the heel of the corporation pressing down. It didn't feel natural, went on too long and muddied with the earlier content in a way that makes me question it's accuracy. If Huawei had so much editorial control, what other devices from major competitors did you have to miss out in the timeline to keep them happy? I'm glad you're getting sponsors- you've more than earned them, and deserve to get paid...particularly with custom fridges and bathroom renovations on the line. However, a bit more of a clear delineation between sponsored and non-sponsored content would be appreciated, both in the title of the video and in the segway between the two, as well as presentation style that feels less "corporate". I don't think you are lying about the product, or would parot talking points you don't agree with, but I don't enjoy seeing you speak but hearing Huawei talk...particularly given their already questionable buisness practises. Hope this helps!
Seasurfer 17 өдрийн өмнө
@Snazzy Labs No worries. Hope it didn't come across as harsh or ungrateful- I'm just some random dude on the internets after all. Content is still stellar, and I look forward to you hitting the big 1 million real soon :)

Wow... I expected a lot more "history" than this. For those who didn’t watch: technically the first smart phone… SKIP most of the actual innovations and smartphones that many people would have likely made the jump from dumb to smart phones (Blackberry, palm, Windows phone, etc, etc, etc) Skip those… Cut right to the iPhone... Touch on 4G... Huawei, Huawei Huawei...Who would sit through a video about the history of the smartphone, anyway? Certainly not "business peoples and tech enthusiasts" What an interesting execution for an ad disguised as an informative video. If I’m being fair, Huawei paid for this ad. You could have left every word you said about the Huawei stuff and that would have been fine. I get it. That’s how you get paid. The problem came in when there was so little actual content beyond the ad; I’m surprised you bothered with the “history” part at all.

Didn't you break the law by doing business with Huawei since you're based in the US? Also pretty shit ad- forgets to mention Huawei runs a shitty Android fork and has no Google play services. Also that they're the espionage arm of a totalitarian regime and provides technology to help the CCP round up and track Uighurs and as such are complicit in an ongoing genocide.

Quinn, I genuinely love your content, but this was a miss. Not as big of a miss as the MKBHD Buick video, but still a miss. It felt like a Huawei commercial, and the biggest flaws of the phone (ie no gApps and the company being banned in the US) were left out. The first half about the history was great, but then once we got to the now the video became a clear commercial.
Tams80 17 өдрийн өмнө
The ad was obnoxiously long and Huawei... that Harmony OS is not what they've made it out to be says it all (and yes, especially with cameras they have done some innovation; that doesn't make up for it). And the light-hearted shot at MrMobile was not appreciated, especially since he is very open and transparent with his videos.
Tams80 16 өдрийн өмнө
@Snazzy Labs The mocking of the "phones were more interesting when they were old" opinion. Sorry if that wasn't your intent (which it seems it wasn't). However, the video was still rather too much ad. Ads are perfectly fine in moderation, but come on... Not to mention it being Huawei, but that's best left for discussion elsewhere.

The video feels rushed in a weird way. The small shutter angle in the talking head shoot results in a unnatural and jarring lack of motion blur. There is a lot of phones references crammed in the first half of the video, the part actually about the history of smartphone, all with illustrations that indicates the effort put in the research and the editing. But it feels more like an enumeration of new smartphones/specs than a analytic view on the evolution of smartphones, which is what I would expect from a Snazzy Labs video titled the way it is. The video is fine, but the title sets expectations that aren't met by the content in the video, a better title could have been "How far have smartphones come ? - History of smartphones & Mate 40 Overview". I really don't mind the video being sponsored by Huawei (a newly wed must have some bills to pay), the Mate 40 seems to actually be very close to the penicle of smartphone, it's an interesting way present that fact through an historical lens. It's somewhat remarkable that Huawei sponsored a video in which other brands are mentioned, for a phone most Snazzy Labs' audience won't even consider buying. Finally, I hope the subject will be revisited in a longer more analytical video ! Also, great Floatplane t-shirt 😁

This video is a disgrace. It’s an ad-sponsored by one of the most unethical companies in the world, in fact-one that helps to administer prison camps for ethnic minorities-for a terrible Chinese spying and espionage tool (sorry, “consumer product”). What’s worse is that you clearly went to great lengths to trick the viewer into thinking that it isn’t an ad by rushing through only the legal bare minimum disclosure, not to mention the fact that the title doesn’t describe the actual video in any way. An apology to your viewers is warranted.

I personally use the iPhone 11 little more than 1 year on. And frankly I am getting less and less excited about new phones. Not because they are not getting better, but because what I have is plenty good enough for me what I am doing with it oh and the marginal improvements and specs don't matter to me on the user level I am at. I see people crying because of the notch and so on. To be honest I do not think it affects my phones functionality on the display front enough that I should be angry about this. If i think of it deeper. It does not matter at all. when I am going to swap this phone? when it becomes slow to the level of annoyance. and I guess this means I still easily have 2 good years left.
